Like its most recent predecessor, the 2019 Volkswagen Golf, the 2022 model is equipped with a 2.0L Turbocharged engine. Thanks to innovations in technology, the new version has more horsepower and torque—at 315 hp and 310 lb-ft—making it the Golf R’s most powerful engine yet.

This engine comes with a standard 6- speed manual transmission or a 7-speed DSG automatic transmission with sport paddle shifters. Both work in tandem with the newly developed SDS+ Cross Differential system with dynamic traction support for increased accuracy of motion.

The updated engine is also paired with VW’s newly developed R-performance 4MOTION^® all-wheel drive system with torque vectoring. This new AWD system can transfer 100% of the rear-wheel power to either wheel depending on the circumstance, so cornering takes on a whole new level of precision.

Another exciting new feature of the 2022 Golf R is the addition of a Driving Mode Selection system that includes Special and Drift Modes. In Drift mode, the maximum available torque is delivered to the outer rear wheel to help initiate a slide, followed by equal torque to both rear wheels to help sustain a smooth slide.
